In Riggen, the landscape played a central role in shaping a green and sustainable residential environment. The design focused on preserving and enhancing the area’s verdant character, while prioritising accessibility, biodiversity, and spaces for social interaction. Green areas were complemented with seasonal plantings that support pollinators, and existing trees were surveyed and preserved to maintain the site’s natural identity. Nature-inspired play areas encourage movement, imaginative play, and spontaneous encounters. Fallen trees and branches are intentionally left in place, supporting both local wildlife and children’s den-building. Residents’ wishes for growing spaces and communal facilities culminated in the creation of the ‘Felleshuset’ a greenhouse for gatherings and cultivation alike.
The façades in Riggen are unified by a deep falun red colour palette, with yellow accents providing a subtle yet necessary contrast. Trellises add variation and vitality to the façades while introducing spatial qualities. The column system of the gallery walkways was carefully designed to give the buildings a distinct graphic character, lending rhythm and structure to the architecture. By integrating storage and ancillary buildings into the residential volumes, shared outdoor spaces are opened up, creating clear sightlines and inviting pedestrian connections.
The homes feature generous outdoor areas, either facing the street or opening onto lush green spaces, or private, sheltered balconies with views toward surrounding greenery. Forecourt terraces are designed to enhance the sense of safety by encouraging residents to spend time along the neighbourhood street. Plantings adjacent to the terraces act as soft screens, forming intimate, green niches even for those living in apartments.
