YEAR 2021
Although galleries are often described as important platforms for critical social discussion, their doors often remain closed to many. At the same time, art itself is in danger of losing its value, as the increasing demand to produce (and sell) art leaves less time and space for the artist's critical thinking and experimentation. The project aims to strengthen the public dialogue while giving the artist time and space. A-i-R (artist in residence) is a series of independent artist residencies that function as an extension of Malmö Konsthall. They are located in different parts of Malmö and work with the local communities. The project is based on a reference study of Malmö Konsthall designed by Klas Anshelm.
The physical distance between Malmö's different neighbourhoods is short, but it is the underlying social, economic and structural dimensions that create obstacles. The artist residences have been placed according to the City of Malmö's own strategy so that the initiatives are mutually reinforcing. An important aspect of the project is to create a positive movement towards marginalized areas, not away from them
When Malmö Konsthall closes to prepare new exhibitions, the artist residences open their exhibitions. In this way, Malmö Konsthall is always open. Like Malmö Konsthall, the artist residences have one large and many small lanterns facing north. In A-i-R, the larger lantern provides light to the exhibition space and the smaller lanterns create diffuse daylight in the studio. Large windows along the facade create curiosity and the opportunity to take part in the art, without entering. The floor plan allows for different degrees of privacy. The rooms vary from total privacy to full transparency. The artists living in the residence get a temporary break from the demands of production, and instead focus on reflection, experimentation and valuable dialog with the public.
